House Democrat: Increase the Gas Tax

Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN) came out in favor of a federal gas tax hike on Saturday. He's not the first Democrat to do so in recent weeks.

House Democrat: Increase the Gas Tax

A House Democrat called for an increase in the federal gas tax to pay for infrastructure improvements, the latest in a line of Democrats calling for a tax hike in recent weeks.

Rep. Collin Peterson (D-MN) called for an increase in the 18.4-cents-per-gallon federal gas tax – and Minnesota’s state gas tax – at a town hall on Saturday, according to the local West Central Tribune.

Peterson said he would favor an increase in the federal gas tax to help pay for a major infrastructure plan. The tax hasn’t been increased in 25 years, he said.

He thought the state ought to consider it, too, he said to the legislators, “but I don’t think you’re going to.”

Just two weeks ago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D-Chicago) visited Washington, D.C. and announced support for a 10-cent-per-gallon increase in the federal gas tax (a relative increase of 54 percent). Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) introduced a plan in March to increase the federal gas tax by 1.5 cents per gallon, per year, through 2030.

American drivers enjoy low gas prices now relative to Recession-era prices – the national average cost of a gallon of gas is $2.42. A year ago, it was $2.13.

President Trump has stated his support for a $1 trillion investment in U.S. infrastructure, but administration aides have suggested to pay for the investment with $137 billion in tax credits over 10 years rather than government spending.
