House Dems Are Urging Leadership to Look at Impeaching President Trump

House Democrats are reportedly urging their leadership to start impeachment proceedings against President Trump, according to a report by NBC News.

Rank-and-file Democrats are growing increasingly frustrated with both the Trump administration’s attempts to stonewall their investigations and their leadership for not putting impeachment on the table.

“Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee have grown increasingly impatient with President Donald Trump’s attempts to block their Russia investigation. And now, some of them are urging the use of “stronger tools,” including impeachment proceedings, in order to strengthen their access to documents and witnesses, according to several lawmakers who spoke with NBC News.”

“The obstruction stuff the president’s engaged in now is causing people to give this a second look,” Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) said in an interview. “Whatever you think about the findings in the report itself, the blanket defiance of lawfully issued subpoenas and refusal to cooperate with constitutionally required oversight is — in and of itself — basis for impeachment.”

“The more that the president denies us, the ordinary lawful demands for witnesses and documents, the more unified we are,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) told reporters. “The most impeachable president in the history of the United States.

However, despite this frustration, Democratic House leaders like Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) do not seem ready to pursue impeachment.

“The short answer is, that may not be the best answer in this constitutional crisis,” Nadler said about impeachment, according to NBC News.

Pelosi had previously said that Trump was “not worth” impeaching, but recently appeared more open to the possibility, saying Trump was “self-impeaching” himself through his actions.

“While I understand Speaker Pelosi and the leadership’s desire to take it slow and let the investigations proceed, I believe President Trump should be impeached,” Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) said. “The facts that are adduced in impeachment hearings will be sufficient for most of the American people and, if the Republican Senate doesn’t see the truth laid out before their eyes, they will have to face the ire of their constituents and the shame of history.”

A Democratic aide told NBC News that Democrats should start impeachment proceedings now, adding “there will be so much evidence in front of people. You look weak because you didn’t have the fortitude to do it in the beginning.”
