The House GOP is leading the way to avoid another government shutdown, with a deal emerging early this week that would fund most of the government for another six weeks but fund the military for a full year.

CBS News reported:

House Republican leaders plan to head off the threat of another government shutdown with a short-term spending bill that would also fund defense spending at increased levels for the rest of the fiscal year. … They are planning to hold a vote Tuesday evening the measure, which, if successful, would avert a shutdown this week, on Feb. 8, and would keep the government funded into March.

…Here’s what the proposed bill would do: Fund the government through March 23; fund a full year of defense spending at the levels laid out in the National Defense Authorization Act that passed the House and Senate in November; fund community health centers for two years.

The bill would not have a solution for so-called “Dreamers,” young, undocumented immigrants whose Obama-era protections may expire soon, and would not address the looming debt ceiling.

Some Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), are opposing the House GOP effort because it funds the military for a year but not domestic priorities.

However, a vote against full military funding will be a difficult one for some Democrats to take, especially in an election year.
