House Intel Report: Clapper Confirmed Existence of Steele Dossier to CNN

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper admitted to the House Intelligence Committee that he verified the existence of the Steele dossier to CNN, according to the released committee report on Russian interference.

Clapper and former FBI Director James Comey briefed the president-elect on the dossier, which contains embarrassing allegations about President Trump, in January 2017. After their meeting, various CNN reporters broke the story of the briefing, and BuzzFeed published the full, unverified document.

In testimony, Clapper acknowledged that he “confirmed the existence of the dossier to the media” (emphasis added):

It is important to note that Evan Perez, Jim Sciutto, Jake Tapper, and Carl Bernstein of CNN reported on January 12, [2017], that President-elect Trump was briefed on classified information indicating that the Russians have compromising personal or financial information that the Russians could use against President-elect Trump. The Committee’s investigation revealed that President-elect Trump was indeed briefed on the contents of the Steele dossier and when questioned by the Committee, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper admitted that he confirmed the existence of the dossier to the media.

Clapper’s testimony on media leaks were inconsistent though. In July 2017 testimony, he told the committee that the did not “discuss the dossier” with the media. But he then admitted talking with CNN’s Jake Tapper about the anti-Trump document, and he acknowledged that he may have discussed it with other journalists.

Media reporting on the dossier prompted an outburst from then-President-elect Trump at a press conference. “You are fake news!” he yelled at CNN’s Jim Acosta, in what became a budding rivalry with CNN.

As the report notes, Clapper joined the network as a contributor following his service as director of national intelligence. CNN host Chris Cuomo called him a part of CNN’s “family.”
