How ‘The Wall’ Impacted a Planned Trip by Mexico’s President to the U.S.

The Washington Post reported over the weekend that Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto called off a planned trip to the U.S. in March due to disagreements with President Trump over "the wall."

President Trump promised to build a big, beautiful wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump also promised, to the joy of his supporters, that Mexico would pay for that wall.

Now, that promise is getting in the way of U.S.-Mexico relations, and in the way of public efforts by Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to patch things up.

The Washington Post reported:

Peña Nieto was eyeing an official trip to Washington this month or in March, but both countries agreed to call off the plan after Trump would not agree to publicly affirm Mexico’s position that it would not fund construction of a border wall that the Mexican people widely consider offensive, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a confidential conversation.

…One Mexican official said Trump “lost his temper.”

If true, this exchange wouldn’t be the first time Trump and Peña Nieto came to verbal blows over the proposed wall.

NTK Network reported in January 2017, about a year ago:

After Trump signed an executive order authorizing the construction of the border wall, Nieto restated that Mexico would not pay for the wall. Trump repeatedly claimed that Mexico would pay for the full cost of the wall during the 2016 election.

In an interview aired Wednesday night with ABC’s David Muir, Trump scoffed at Nieto’s refusals, saying, “He has to say that. He has to say that.” Trump further insisted that Mexico would pay for the wall in some form.

Trump and Peña Nieto canceled a scheduled meeting over the above impasse.

A week or so later, Trump told a National Prayer Breakfast crowd not to worry about his “tough phone calls” with world leaders, including Peña Nieto.
