Hypocrisy Alert: As Speaker, Pelosi Put Winning Elections Ahead of Gun Safety Legislation

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told reporters that she would “rather pass gun safety legislation than win the election” on Thursday following the tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida on Wednesday.

Pelosi specifically called for the creation of a Congressional Select Committee to study gun violence in America and the impact of assault weapons in America during the press conference on Thursday.

However, when Pelosi was Speaker of the House, she did little to address the issue, seemingly out of fear that Democrats would lose their majority in the House of Representatives.

For instance, in 2009, then-Attorney General Eric Holder suggested that the “Obama administration would like to bring back the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.”

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” then-Speaker Pelosi told reporters about the possibility of bringing back the assault weapons ban.

The Los Angeles Times speculated that Pelosi didn’t want to address an assault weapons ban at the time because she needed “to keep a Democratic majority in the 2010 elections, [and] was likely protecting those Blue Dog Democrats.”

“I can’t even get a hearing [on gun control issues],” Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) told The Hill in 2010. “I’m not blaming the Republicans. I’m blaming [Democratic] leadership and the administration. They’re in charge. … It’s a question of priorities.”

The Hill reported:

“Quigley noted the 111th Congress has not debated closing the gun-show loophole or reauthorizing the assault weapons ban, which Obama promised to pursue on the presidential campaign trail.”

“Instead, Democrats have passed gun-rights measures, including the “Protecting Gun Owners in Bankruptcy Act of 2010” and legislation that would allow guns in national parks and on Amtrak trains.”

So while Pelosi claims that she would “rather pass gun safety legislation than win the election,” her actual record tells a different story.
