Hypocrisy Alert: DNC Chair Claims He’s Committed to Elevating Women into Leadership Roles

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Tom Perez tweeted out his commitment to elevating women into positions of leadership on Thursday, to kick off of the start of the Women’s History Month.

However, the DNC leadership, which is comprised of 12 positions including Perez, only has four women serving in those roles, according to the DNC website.

The four women in leadership roles at the DNC are DNC Vice Chair Maria Elena Durazo, DNC Vice Chair Rep. Grace Meng, DNC Assistant Treasurer Lorna Johnson, and DNC Vice Chair of Civic Engagement and Voter Participation Karen Carter Peterson.

That means that only 33 percent of the DNC’s leadership are women. It doesn’t get much better for Perez’s claim if you look at the other Democratic Committee leaders who are also listed on the DNC website.

Tina Kotek, who chairs the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, is the only woman that is a leader of a Democratic Committee. That means that of the 16 total leadership positions, the DNC has only five currently held by women, or 31 percent.

So while Perez claims he is “committed” to elevating women into positions of leadership, his actions as DNC chair tell a different story.
