Hypocrisy Alert: Manchin is Fundraising Off Equal Pay Day Despite Paying Female Staffers Less Money

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) sent a fundraising email to supporters that touted his support for paycheck fairness on Tuesday despite the fact that he pays female staffers in his Senate office less than their male colleagues.

“Today, Equal Pay Day, represents how far into the year that women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year,” Manchin wrote.

Equal Pay Day was started by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) two decades ago, and “symbolizes the date women must work full time up until to make the same amount that men made working full time the year prior.”

“The first vote I took in the United States Senate was for paycheck fairness, and I will continue to fight for it because people should earn the same pay for the same work. Period,” Manchin wrote. “It shouldn’t matter whether you’re a woman or a man – you should be treated fairly and equally no matter what.”

An analysis conducted by the NTK Network found that Manchin paid female staffers 76 cents for every dollar paid to men during the 2017 fiscal year.

What makes Manchin’s email even more hypocritical is that he actually doesn’t pay female and male staffers equally despite having the same position.

According to NTK’s analysis, “two female regional coordinators made $33,000 each in 2017, while their male counterpart made $38,541 during that same period.”

Meanwhile, a female legislative assistant in Manchin’s office made $73,833 in 2017, while her male colleague with the same title made $76,749 in 2017.

Manchin claims to support equal pay for equal work, but his actions tell a very different story.
