HYPOCRISY ALERT: Mayor Pete to Fundraise With Uber Exec Despite Claiming to Support Drivers

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) finds himself in the middle of another hypocrisy alert after holding a fundraiser with an Uber executive over the weekend, despite previously expressing support for Uber drivers protesting the ridesharing company.

The Daily Beast first reported that Buttigieg would “headline a fundraiser in Oakland hosted, in part, by Uber executive Chelsea Kohler, the rideshare company’s director of product communications.”

This fundraiser came less than a month after Buttigieg tweeted he was standing in solidarity with Uber drivers who were protesting for a living wage.

“I’m standing in solidarity with @_drivers_united and all those striking across the country today for livable wages, more job security, and regulated fares,” Buttigieg tweeted. “We must raise the labor standards in this country.”

Organizer with the Los Angeles-based drivers’ association blasted Buttigieg’s decision to fundraise with Kohler in a statement to the Daily Beast on Friday.

“We appreciate Pete Buttigieg’s support, and this is an instance where there are two clearly opposing sides and he must pick one,” Brian Dolber told the Daily Beast. “Passenger fares either go to the hardworking drivers or the multi-billion dollar companies—and right now Uber/Lyft are regularly taking 50%+ of what the passenger pays while countless drivers are homeless or living in poverty. Standing with drivers, means standing against the executives who have been ruthlessly slashing driver pay year after year.”

Buttigieg’s national press secretary, Chris Meagher, declined to comment on the matter.
