Hypocrisy Alert: Ocasio-Cortez Tied Up in Dark Money Scandal, Per Report

Democrat rising star Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is wrapped up in a dark money scandal, according to a new report by the Washington Post. Federal campaign finance records show that Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff established two political action committees (PACs) “that paid a corporation he ran more than $1 million in 2016 and 2017.”

Brand New Congress LLC, the corporation owned by [Ocasio-Cortez chief of staff] Saikat Chakrabarti, was also paid $18,880 for strategic consulting by Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional campaign in 2017, records show. The following year, he worked as a volunteer to manage her campaign, according to his LinkedIn profile.

As the Post noted, the arrangement is “a sharp juxtaposition with Ocasio-Cortez’s calls for transparency in politics.” Just last month, she railed against “dark money” on Twitter:

It’s statements like the above that are causing some to blast Ocasio-Cortez with hypocrisy charges. Others filed an ethics complaint against the PACs for failing to properly disclose their spending.

Those are charges that Ocasio-Cortez denies. “There is no violation,” she told Fox News on Tuesday. Her lawyer stated that the PACs, LLC, and her campaign “fully complied with the law and the highest ethical standards.”

Here’s how Wall Street Journal editorial page writer James Freeman described the issue on Fox News:

Anti-dark money crusaders on the left like Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse have thus far remained silent on the issue, further cementing the notion that these liberals only take issue with conservative groups.
