‘If You’ve Landed More Than Twice in Reagan National, You’re Not [It]’: Emanuel on 2020

Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D-Chicago), the former Obama chief of staff known for his blunt nature and occasional foul language, put to rest rumors he may run for president in 2020 in an interview with Politico.

Politico Morning Score’s Zach Montellaro wrote (paywall):

Emanuel was a hard no on running for president in 2020. He argued that after three two-term presidents in a row, America is historically due for a single term for President Donald Trump, but Democrats need to pick the right candidate.

Who’s the right candidate, according to the man who once served a two-term Democratic president in the White House? Someone who hasn’t spent a lot of time in Washington. Emanuel provided this memorable line:

“If you’ve landed more than twice in Reagan National, you’re not on the ticket,” he joked. Democrats need to focus on keeping the “anti-Hillary” voters he says Republicans lost in the midterms.

Reagan National Airport is the closest airport to Washington, D.C., just minutes from the nation’s capital. The obvious subtext of Emanuel’s joke is that neither members of Congress nor candidates ‘plugged in’ to D.C. will resonate with voters in 2020.

If Emanuel is right, the Democratic Party may be in trouble in the next few years. Most of their top tier candidates – including Joe Biden, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Kamala Harris (D-CA) – are, by definition, Washington politicians.
