According to reports from CNN, the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Justice recommended criminal charges for former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe on Thursday.

According to CNN’s Pamela Brown, the inspector general “sent a criminal referral” to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

This referral comes after an inspector general report accused McCabe of lying to investigators four times. According to The Washington Post, the report justified McCabe’s firing based on his handling of the Clinton Foundation probe:

The report from Inspector General Michael Horowitz is remarkable for its level of detail, casting McCabe as a man who repeatedly lied to investigators and his own boss about his role in a disclosure of information, even while he lashed out at others who he thought might be responsible for leaks.

It accuses McCabe of lying at least four times, three of them under oath, and says that while he had the power to approve disclosures of information to the media, his doing so in this instance violated policy because it was done “in a manner designed to advance his personal interests at the expense of Department leadership.”

President Trump will probably be pleased at the news, since he blasted McCabe in a tweet last week after the IG report:

The combination of McCabe’s status as a leaker and the president’s animosity toward leakers in the federal government will undoubtedly please the president.
