Indicted GOP Congressman Throws Wife Under the Bus: She Was In Charge of the Money

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and his wife Margaret were indicted this week on federal charges that they stole $250,000 in campaign funds to “furnish their lavish lifestyle,” according to CNN.

That included a $14,000 vacation to Italy, groceries, and other household items. The Hunters are also accused of “wire fraud, falsification of records and prohibited use of campaign contributions, among other charges.”

When asked by Fox News to explain the lavish trips, Hunter claimed that his overseas vacations were really fundraisers:

“That’s how we campaigned and tried to raise money, is by travelling, having dinners, meeting people,” Hunter told Fox’s Martha MacCallum.

It is illegal to accept political donations from foreign nationals, although it is possible the Hunters were soliciting donations from ex-pats.

Hunter then deflected any blame from himself and placed it squarely on his wife, Margaret:

He did acknowledge that his campaign, led by his wife and campaign manager Margaret Hunter, made “mistakes” but maintained that he was not responsible for any improper spending.

“My campaign did make mistakes,” Hunter said. “There was money spent on things not by me but by the campaign. And I paid that back before my last election.”

“She was also the campaign manager, so whatever she did that’ll be looked at too, I’m sure,” he continued. “But I didn’t do it. I didn’t spend any money illegally.”

A member of Congress blaming his wife for his campaigns’ financial mistakes is not a great look for anybody. The Hunters pleaded not guilty.
