Iowa Poll: Biden, Sanders Tied at the Top, Mayor Pete in Surprising 3rd

A new Emerson poll of Iowa caucusgoers found that former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) are still locked in a tight battle atop the polls in the Hawkeye State.

Biden, who earned 25 percent in the poll, has not formally entered the presidential race. Sanders, who jumped in last month, earned 24 percent. The poll’s margin of error is +/-6.2 percent.

But the poll’s biggest surprise was that South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg managed to come in third place with 11 percent. He was followed closely by Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA) at 10 percent and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) at 9 percent.

According to the poll, Buttigieg appears to be pulling votes from Sanders:

Sanders maintains a lead among 18-29 year olds with 44%, followed by Buttigieg with 22%. Biden leads among all other age groups with 32% support among 30-49 year olds, 29% among 50-64 year olds, and 31% among those 65 years or older. [Emerson pollster Spencer] Kimball notes that, “If Buttigieg is able to maintain his momentum, his candidacy appears to be pulling from the same demographic of young voters as Sanders, and that could become a problem for Sanders.”

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) earned 6 percent, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke received 5 percent, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar had 2 percent support. Four candidates received just one percent: former Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), former HUD Secretary Julian Castro (D-TX), and Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA).

Quite embarrassingly, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) received zero percent support in this Emerson poll.
