The franchise announced on Wednesday that they will take talent from the Marvel Universe to bring Star Wars to television.
Lucasfilm announced Wednesday that “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau will “produce and write a live-action Star Wars series,” bringing the franchise to television as a live-action piece for the first time since the “Star Wars Holiday Special.”
The actor is slated to play a part in Disney’s upcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which will explore the origins of one of the franchise’s signature characters, Han Solo.
Favreau, the studio said, would create the series for Disney’s soon-to-be-released Netflix-type platform:
“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”
As a voice actor, Favreau also appeared in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” an animated series appearing on Cartoon Network and Netflix. That television show, which bridged the gap between Star Wars Episodes II and III, was the most successful attempt to bring the franchise to television to date.
