Is Bernie Sanders Waging a Shadow War Against Andrew Cuomo?

It would appear that supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) may be attempting to get rid of Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY), a possible 2020 candidate, well ahead of the 2020 presidential primary campaign.

According to the New York Daily News, actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running against Cuomo in the Democratic primary, and groups supporting her have enlisted the help of top advisers from Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign.

The Working Families Party, which has backed Nixon, recently hired Kenneth Pennington’s firm, Middle Seat, which specializes in “mass emails, online fundraising, digital ads, website and graphic design, and social media for campaigns.”

Pennington was the digital director for Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, which set historic online fundraising records.

Pennington’s firm had previously been working on the Nixon campaign along with another Sanders alumnus, Tim Tagaris.

The gig with the Nixon campaign was “always supposed to be temporary until Tagaris’ firm could add more people,” according to the New York Daily News.

“Now that we’re not working on the campaign directly, we’re going to be working on the Working Families Party efforts around her campaign,” Pennington told the New York Daily News.

Nixon, who has been gaining in the polls, is a longshot to win the Democratic primary against Cuomo. But so was Sanders in the 2016 presidential primary, and he outperformed expectations.

Cuomo has often been rumored as a possible candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, but a primary defeat from Nixon would almost certainly end Cuomo’s presidential ambitions, thus a huge potential win for Sanders.
