Is Bill de Blasio Running for President?

Liberal New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is heading to Iowa in December to speak at the Iowa Progress Holiday Party, according to a report from Politico. It’s not the mayor’s first trip to the first-in-the-nation caucus, but the trip comes as potential 2020 challengers to President Trump begin to test the waters.

According to the Politico report, liberals in Iowa are excited for the visit:

De Blasio will travel to Iowa to headline the Progress Iowa annual holiday party — the group’s largest event of the year and its most important outlet for fundraising. Progress Iowa is a self-described issue-focused organization which seeks to rally voters around progressive candidates and issues with the hopes of helping more progressives hold elected office in that state.

Matt Sinovic, the group’s executive director, told POLITICO his members are eager to hear from the mayor — specifically about his universal pre-K initiative which Democrats in that state have tried but failed to implement in the past.

De Blasio, the mayor of America’s largest city, took on a larger national role in the 2016 campaign, supporting Hillary Clinton. He made trips to Iowa in order to support her candidacy during the primary against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), so this will not be his first go-around.

But in the wake of the loss to Donald Trump, he expressed dissatisfaction with the way the candidate failed to listen to national progressives.
