Is Claire McCaskill Going to Oppose Trump’s Infrastructure Effort?

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) appeared to reiterate her opposition to President Trump’s emerging infrastructure plan this week, meaning she is expected to oppose the president’s three major priorities of his first two years: health care, tax cuts, and now infrastructure.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on McCaskill’s latest comments on Wednesday:

“The plan that the president is talking about right now would be of very little assistance to Missouri because Missouri doesn’t have enough money right now to meet just the needs of maintenance in Missouri,” said Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who seeks re-election in November. “So the notion that they are going to have extra money laying around to leverage with private companies, which then dictates the use of tolls” is not likely, she said.

McCaskill said that “no business is going to invest in (rural) roads and bridges because there is not enough traffic to pay the tolls to support the investment” and that “Trump tolls are not going to be popular in Missouri.”

The president wants to use public dollars to spur private investment in infrastructure.

McCaskill has touted her meetings with Trump advisors, like Jared Kushner, on the subject of infrastructure, but she appears ready to oppose the president’s plan from the get-go as she launches a tough re-election campaign in 2018.
