In the clearest sign yet that he’s likely running for president, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) told NPR that he’s traveling to each of the Democratic presidential primary states with early voting contests on the calendar.

Under the guise of his “Dignity of Work” tour, designed to highlight his appeal to working-class voters, Brown said he would travel to , New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada.

His top priority is winning back voters that Trump won in 2016, particularly in Midwest states like his home state of Ohio, as well as Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

“I think we need to win in the heartland,” he told NPR.

A strong ally of labor unions, Brown hopes his brand of economic populism can counter Trump’s strength with blue collar voters in the Midwest and elsewhere in the country. Like Trump, he’s criticized trade deals such as NAFTA and supports some tariffs on imported products.

Brown, 66, will likely not be the only Midwesterner running for the Democratic nomination, however. His neighbor to the north (and west), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that she’s inching closer to running for president herself.

Brown’s appeal among worker-class voters could be mitigated, however, by his gender and ethnicity. Much of today’s Democratic Party is looking for a person of color or a woman to be the party’s standard bearer. A white man from Ohio could struggle in that environment.
