Is Obamacare Repeal Now More Likely than Tax Reform?

Barely a week ago, Democrats were gleeful after Republicans pulled their bill to repeal and replace Obamacare from the House floor. Tax reform became the next big fight for the GOP, even as NTK Network reminded readers that Obamacare repeal is not dead.

What a difference a week makes. According to new reports, another Obamacare repeal vote may come as soon as the end of this week. Meanwhile, GOP divisions are emerging on tax reform.

The potential Obamacare vote comes after Vice President Mike Pence held separate meetings with moderate and conservative Republicans on Monday:

The White House would like to see a revised bill come up for a vote as early as week’s end, before the House breaks for a spring recess, and the text of the new proposal could be ready some time on Tuesday, lawmakers said.

What will the new Obamacare repeal-and-replacement plan look like? Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) said on Monday it will “give states the power to opt out of certain Obamacare insurance mandates.”

Meanwhile, tax reform – which Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said is “much simpler” than health care reform – is struggling before it even starts.

The GOP is split over the proposed border adjustment tax that will be a key revenue generator for any tax reform package. This had led “import-heavy companies” like Wal-Mart and Target to unleash “their most robust lobbying and public-relations pushes in recent memory.”

Meanwhile, a New York Times report reveals that the Treasury Department, a necessary player and partner in tax reform, lacks the capacity to push major changes because Mnuchin is the only political appointee confirmed to Treasury so far.

A week can make a big difference in Washington.
