Is the Biden Bounce Disappearing? CNN Poll Shows His Support Dropped 7 Points

When former Vice President Joe Biden entered the Democratic presidential primary, he was already leading the pack of contenders. After he made his formal announcement in late April, his lead surged even further.

Now it appears that lead is shrinking as voters begin to analyze the 76-year-old’s record more closely.

A new CNN poll shows that Biden’s support dropped from 39 percent in April down to 32 percent in their survey released Tuesday. But it doesn’t appear that any of Biden’s competition made significant gains in the past few weeks.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders continues to stand alone in second place with 18%, followed by California Sen. Kamala Harris with 8%, 7% for Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and 5% each for South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke. New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker comes in with 3% support, with former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar at 2% each. The remaining 14 candidates tested in the poll landed at 1% or less.

According to the poll, Biden and Sanders are viewed favorably by roughly the same percentage of Democrats. But among all Americans, Biden outshines Sanders considerably.

The former Delaware senator earns a significantly positive favorability rating nationally (46% favorable to 38% unfavorable). Views on Sanders are almost evenly divided, and tilt positive by just two points (46% favorable to 44% unfavorable).

The one candidate with the worst favorability? New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Just 18 percent of Democrats surveyed said they view de Blasio favorably.
