Is the DNC Idiotic for Not Having a Debate on Fox News?

The Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) decision to not allow Fox News to host a Democratic presidential primary debate doesn’t seem to be a very good decision in light of how well Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) recent town hall on the network performed.

DNC Chair Tom Perez announced in early March that Fox News would not be hosting a 2020 Democratic presidential primary debate, citing a report that alleged the network killed a story concerning hush money payments made by President Trump before the 2016 election.

The DNC opposition didn’t stop Sanders from teaming up with the network, however, to hold a town hall on Monday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which “an estimated 2.55 million people” watched, according to the Associated Press.

To put that in some perspective, just 1.35 million people saw Sanders’ February town hall on CNN.

CNN has hosted a slew of town halls for 2020 Democratic hopefuls, but none of them have been able to crack the 2-million-viewer threshold. The closest was Sen. Kamala Harris’ (D-CA) January town hall, which was seen by 1.95 million viewers.

This impressive rating’s numbers for Sanders’ town hall has other 2020 Democratic hopefuls like South BendMayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) in talks with the network to host a town hall.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) went a step further and has announced a May 8, 2019 town hall with Fox News.

Despite the success of Sanders’ town hall, the DNC is “not reconsidering its decision” exclude Fox from hosting a Democratic presidential primary debate, according to the Associated Press.
