Is the DNC Vice Chair Promoting Violence Against President Trump?

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) appeared to signal that people should start violently protesting President Trump, when he tweeted out a picture of him holding “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook” on Tuesday.

The book Ellison is holding was written by Dartmouth College lecturer Mark Bray as an attempt to chronicle the rise of the Antifa movement, which gained notoriety in 2017 for its violent protests.

Ellison’s Tweet:

During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press” in 2017, Bray supported Antifa’s violent protest tactics against white-supremacist organizations as a “legitimate response.”

Dartmouth President Philip J. Hanlon issued a statement following the backlash from Bray’s apparent support of violence on his “Meet The Press” appearance.

“As an institution, we condemn anything but civil discourse in the exchange of ideas,” Hanlon wrote. “The endorsement of violence in any form is contrary to Dartmouth values.”

NBC News has previously reported that although “Bray doesn’t participate in the group’s protests, he nonetheless considers himself an ally.”

Ellison’s tweet supporting Bray’s book, and his comment that it “[strikes] fear in the heart of [Donald Trump],” suggest that Ellison now supports the Antifa movement, which has engaged in violent protests against Trump.

Antifa extremists are responsible for multiple instances of violence against Trump supporters, journalists, and college students, and the FBI is actively investigating Antifa-linked individuals for terror-related matters.
