Is There a Battle Brewing Over Senate Confirmations?

Politico reporting suggests some Senate Republicans are at their wit's end with the constant cycle of nominations and firings coming from the White House.

Is There a Battle Brewing Over Senate Confirmations?

Mike Pompeo (secretary of State), Gina Haspel (CIA director), and Dr. Ronny Jackson (secretary of Veterans Affairs) will all presumably need to go before the U.S. Senate in the coming weeks for nomination hearings and confirmation votes to serve in President Trump’s Cabinet.

Two of the three are replacing recently-fired Cabinet members (Rex Tillerson at State, David Shulkin at Veterans Affairs), and one replaces the man who’s ascending from CIA to State.

The prospect of more weeks-long nomination fights, after months of Cabinet battles in 2017 and the tense fight over Trump’s pick of Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court, has some Senate Republicans stewing. Politico reported:

After using Twitter to abruptly oust his secretaries of state and veterans affairs and promote his CIA chief, the president is counting on the Senate GOP’s slim majority to confirm three new Cabinet members in the coming months — and potentially more, should his EPA administrator succumb to a torrent of withering headlines. Republicans aren’t pleased.

…Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is already threatening to keep the chamber in on nights and weekends to deal with a lingering backlog of lower-level nominees. And if Democrats continue to deploy procedural hurdles, Republicans may consider a change in Senate rules to expedite Trump’s nominees.

It may not be over, either. Rumors are constantly floating around Capitol Hill that Justice Anthony Kennedy may retire from the Supreme Court. Politico mentioned that EPA Administrator Pruitt is under fire.

And, of course, with this president, major firings are sometimes just a tweet away.
