It Was Trump vs. Former FBI Officials on Twitter This Weekend

The president went hard after ex-FBI leaders James Comey, Andrew McCabe, and Robert Mueller in tweets this weekend. Two of those three responded, in one way or another.

It Was Trump vs. Former FBI Officials on Twitter This Weekend

President Donald Trump sent no fewer than seven tweets this weekend about the Russia investigation and the intelligence officials working on the case, a sign the case continues to consume time and effort in his presidency.

The tweets also suggested Trump is angry with FBI officials he has fired, like ex-Director James Comey and ex-Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, for what Trump considers a politically-motivated investigation into his campaign and personal activities.

One tweet celebrated McCabe’s firing and tied him in with “[s]anctimonious James Comey.”

Comey, who has a book coming out in April, fired back in a tweet:

And McCabe’s lawyer, Michael R. Bromwich, responded with a statement of his own on Twitter:

McCabe was fired on Friday, a few days before being eligible to collect on a government pension after decades of service at the FBI. Reports from over the weekend indicate McCabe took notes about his interactions with the president, much like Comey did.

Trump sought to preempt any bad headlines from the McCabe notes in a Sunday morning tweet:

Notably, Trump also went after Robert Mueller – an ex-FBI director and Republican leading the special investigation on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election – for the first time on Twitter.

Mueller has not publicly responded to Trump’s barbs. But if the president’s tweets are an indicator, the investigation may be heating up soon.
