It’s Democrats, Not Republicans, Fighting Over a Government Shutdown

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) are blaming President Trump for a potential government shutdown on Friday, but new reports say Democrats are the ones fighting about whether to keep the government open.

The issue at hand? Obamacare’s massive payments to health insurance companies and whether they should be used as bargaining chips by Democrats to keep the government open.

Politico has more:

Democratic negotiators, led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), are demanding the final funding bill include language to provide permanent Obamacare subsidies to help cover costs for low-income enrollees and keep insurance markets afloat.

But House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), No. 2 behind Pelosi, publicly dismissed that idea Tuesday, saying the fix would be nice to have in the funding bill but should not be a requirement for supporting the legislation and should not be used as a political bargaining chip.

The cost of these payments to big insurers varies, but The Hill reported it’s anywhere from $5 billion to $10 billion.

Democrats have led the charge on the specter of a government shutdown. NTK Network noted in early April that the Democrats used to have a long list of demands to avoid a government shutdown. It’s unclear whether all those demands still apply, but Democrats have just over two days to avoid a shutdown.
