It’s Official: Chinese President Can Rule Indefinitely

The Chinese National People’s Congress passed a constitutional amendment Sunday, doing away with presidential term limits. With the support of 2,958 of the 3,000 delegates, the vote will allow President Xi Jinping to extend “his hard-line authoritarian rule” indefinitely.

The Associated Press has more details:

China’s rubber-stamp lawmakers on Sunday passed a historic constitutional amendment abolishing presidential term limits that will enable President Xi Jinping to rule indefinitely. The National People’s Congress’ nearly 3,000 hand-picked delegates endorsed the constitutional amendment Sunday, voting 2,958 in favor with two opposed, three abstaining and one vote invalidated. The amendment upends a system enacted by former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in 1982 to prevent a return to the bloody excesses of a lifelong dictatorship typified by Mao Zedong’s chaotic 1966-1976 Cultural Revolution.

The New York Times notes that this was a major step in Xi’s “quest to entrench the Communist Party at the heart of politics, society and the economy”:

Sunday’s constitutional amendments marked a victory not just for Mr. Xi’s own ambitions, but also for his quest to entrench the Communist Party at the heart of politics, society and the economy as China ascends globally. Mr. Xi, 64, has in effect created a new legal basis for ruling for another decade or longer as president, along with holding his other posts as Communist Party chief and military chairman. Without the amendments, he would have been forced to step down as president in 2023, weakening his control. … The amendments also reflected his goal of expanding party influence across China’s increasingly complex and wealthy society.
