It’s Trump vs. Obama … But in France?

With the first round of the French presidential election in the rearview mirror, will the runoff be a proxy war between President Trump (populism) and former President Obama (globalism)?

It’s Trump vs. Obama … But in France?

Former President Obama is stepping back into the “political spotlight” on Monday in Chicago, but it may just be the first step in an emerging proxy war between Obama and President Trump over the French presidential election.

Independent centrist Emmanuel Macron won the first round of the French election on Sunday night, earning 23.9 percent of the vote and advancing to a runoff with nationalist Marine Le Pen, who earned 21.4 percent of the vote. The runoff is May 7.

Observers see the runoff as a test for surging populism in the global West, following Brexit and the election of Donald Trump in 2016.

Days before the first round, Macron posted video of a conversation he had with Obama.

The video stoked speculation Obama is supporting Macron. The young Macron has earned comparisons to the energetic 2008 Obama that beat Hillary Clinton and John McCain on his way to the presidency. An Obama spokesman denied that Obama is supporting Macron, but Macron is the only candidate Obama spoke to. It’s hard to imagine Macron posting that message without the former president’s approval.

Trump, meanwhile, had kind words for Le Pen ahead of the runoff, in an interview with the Associated Press.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump says he is not explicitly endorsing Le Pen. But he says he believes she will be helped by the attack that left a Paris police officer dead, because she’s the candidate who is “strongest on borders, and she’s the strongest on what’s been going on in France.”

Trump won Round 1 – Brexit – and Round 2 – the presidential election – of his war with Obama. Who will come out on top in Round 3?
