Jay Inslee Launches Longshot Presidential Bid on One Issue: Climate Change

He’s making climate change his top priority. But will that be a winning formula for the Washington governor to defeat Sanders, Harris, Biden, and the others?

Jay Inslee Launches Longshot Presidential Bid on One Issue: Climate Change

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA) announced Friday he is entering the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. The announcement came via web video, and the governor is expected to hold a press conference at the site of a solar panel company in Seattle later in the day.

“I’m Jay Inslee and I’m running for president because I am the only candidate who will make defeating climate change our nation’s number one priority,” the governor says in a more-than-a-minute-long video that highlights his decades-long focus on climate change and compares tackling the issue to President John F. Kennedy’s focus on going to the moon.

“We’re the first generation to feel the sting of climate change. And we’re the last that can do something about it,” Inslee adds. “We can do this. Join our movement. This is our moment.”

Some are questioning whether Inslee is wise to build his campaign around a single issue like this.

“That’s not necessarily a reliable enough path because every Democratic candidate who is seriously running and is a top-tier contender is going to address climate change,” Democratic strategist Adrienne Elrod said to Axios.
