Jeh Johnson, the former Secretary of Homeland Security under President Barack Obama, said that he believes as long as Donald Trump is President of the United States, retired General John Kelly should remain chief of staff during an interview on Sunday.

There has been widespread backlash directed at Kelly over his handling of domestic abuse allegations against former White House aide Rob Porter by two of Porter’s ex-wives.

Porter was Staff Secretary for President Donald Trump, a position that typically requires the highest level of security clearance, which Porter did not have because of the FBI’s ongoing investigation into domestic abuse allegations against Porter.

CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Johnson during an interview of “State of the Union,” whether he was surprised by how Kelly handled the Rob Porter situation.

“My friendly advice to him is less press – that may be contrary to the [hopes of those] people in the press,” Johnson told Tapper. “Leon Panetta once said the chief of staff is someone who should not be the issue.”

Tapper followed up by asking Johnson whether he believed Kelly should remain White House chief of staff.

“I think as long as Donald Trump is president, our government is best served if John Kelly is in the job of chief of staff. That is my view it may be a minority view among my Democratic friends, but that is my view,” Johnson responded.
