Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he knew of allegations of abuse against immigrants while he served as the Obama administration’s chief of DHS.

The Associated Press reported on Thursday that immigrant youths endured abuse for years at a holding facility in Virginia, detailing horrific conditions and treatment.

“There was a similar set of allegations while I was in office,” he said, but the former DHS secretary claimed they were “unsubstantiated.”

“I directed our inspector general to investigate them, and I recall that most of the allegations came back unsubstantiated, if not all of them,” Johnson added. “Clearly these are very serious allegations, and they deserve to be treated seriously.”

He told Tapper that he hopes the current DHS is investigating to make sure none of that abuse continues today.

Johnson also said he was “aware” of a recent ACLU report, released in May, that details abuse of migrants from 2009 to 2014, while he was in office.
