Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat praised President Trump for his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, in an appearance on CNN’s “New Day” on Wednesday.

“Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewish people and of Israel – 3,000 years,” he told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota. “Everywhere you put a shovel in the ground, you find Jewish roots.”

“[The recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel] should have been 70 years ago when Israel restarted, 50 years ago when Jerusalem was reunited, in 1995 when Congress made that decision, and now, I want to applaud President Trump for fulfilling his promise and making that right move,” Barkat said.

“Here in Jerusalem and in Israel, we applaud the president,” the mayor added.

Trump is expected to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday and announce that he will move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to the ancient capital of the Jewish people.
