House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) told reporters on Monday that he does not believe that impeachment proceedings are “inevitable.” That proclamation comes just one day after Clyburn said during a CNN interview that impeachment would happen “at some point.”

CNN’s Jake Tapper interrupted during one of Clyburn’s answers on “State of the Union” to say it sounded like Clyburn thinks “the president will be impeached, or at least proceedings will begin in the House at some point, but just not right now.”

“Yes, exactly what I feel,” Clyburn replied.

But the South Carolina Democrat walked back that bold prediction late Monday.

“I’m probably farther away from impeachment than anybody in our caucus,” Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters Monday night. “We will not get out in front of our committees. We’ll see what the committees come up with. I’ve said that forever.”

Asked by POLITICO whether he thought impeachment proceedings were inevitable, Clyburn simply said no.

The incident exemplifies that tricky position House Democrats are in with regards to impeachment. While the far-left liberals in their caucus are adamantly in favor of beginning impeachment proceedings, Democrat leadership is attempting to stall or keep them at bay for the time being.

A recent poll conducted by CNN found that the majority Americans, 54 percent, said they do not believe President Trump should be impeached.
