Job Growth Accelerates as U.S. Economy Adds 196,000 Jobs in March

The U.S. economy appeared to accelerate its job growth in March after a somewhat sluggish February. The economy added 196,000 new jobs last month, “an encouraging gain that hints growth in the economy is ready for a revival,” according to CBS News’ MarketWatch.

The unemployment rate remained steady at 3.8 percent, which MarketWatch noted was near a 50-year low. The unemployment rate has remained at or near 4 percent since late 2017.

The number of jobs added in March exceeded expert’s expectations:

The rebound in hiring might temper unease about the economy after a rocky start in 2019. Although a spate of large companies have announced layoffs recently, most firms are still looking to hire. One of their chronic complaints: A shortage of skilled labor.

Before the March employment report, premarket trading pointed to a higher opening for the stock market . The increase exceeded the 179,000 forecast of economists surveyed by MarketWatch.

The biggest sectors to add jobs included the health care, food service, and constructions industries.
