Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced on Tuesday that he will seek the Republican Party’s nomination for Sen. Jeff Flake’s (R-AZ) open seat in 2018, and Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) teased a similar announcement coming on Friday.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Arpaio told David Drucker that he will pursue election after receiving a pardon from President Trump.

The former Maricopa County sheriff later echoed the story on Twitter, pledging his loyalty to the president’s agenda:

Arpaio served as Maricopa County sheriff for years, before losing election amid a scandal surrounding racial-profiling practices at his law enforcement offices. A federal jury convicted Arpaio of contempt of court in the case. Trump intervened with a pardon.

Republicans may find a more electable option in McSally, who has never had to receive a presidential pardon. The representative was also the first female pilot to fly combat missions in Air Force history.
