Joe Manchin Criticizes Democrats for Sitting During SOTU, But Watch This

“I think the Democrats were wrong in not showing respect,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said the day after Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.

“I was very, very upset when I saw the Republicans never, ever stood up with Barack Obama, and there was things I didn’t agree about President Obama in his speech,” he said on MSNBC. “But I was taught in West Virginia there’s a little bit of respect, and you should show that. And I did that then, and I did it last night.”

But video evidence of Manchin during the State of the Union address shows the Democrat looking around him to determine whether he should applaud or stand.

Sitting in the same row as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Manchin looked to his left and right during one particular moment, clapped, looked as if he might stand up, then scooted back in his chair when he saw fellow Democrats were unmoving.

Manchin is clearly scoping the vibe of the chamber to determine what he should do. It’s the kind of behavior one might observe in a middle school classroom.

Manchin, a lifelong Democrat in a deep-red state, is caught in an uncomfortable position – he’s running for re-election this year in a state that loves President Donald Trump more than any other.

His indecisive behavior in the chamber Tuesday night is the perfect embodiment of his awkward re-election campaign.
