John Brennan Says Trump is Trying to ‘Silence’ Critics … in NYT Op-Ed

If the president's goal is to shut up his critics, it obviously isn't working very well.

John Brennan Says Trump is Trying to ‘Silence’ Critics … in NYT Op-Ed

Former CIA Director John Brennan, in a New York Times op-ed on Thursday, claimed that President Trump is trying “silence” critics of his administration by revoking their security clearances.

The White House announced Wednesday that it would pull the former CIA director’s clearance, prompting his Thursday morning piece. Throughout his op-ed, Brennan argues that Trump and his campaign are peddling “hogwash” when they claim there was no collusion with Russian intelligence.

And it’s Trump’s fear of Brennan’s, among other Obama administration officials’, supposed truth-telling that sparked the revocation. “Mr. Trump clearly has become more desperate to protect himself and those close to him, which is why he made the politically motivated decision to revoke my security clearance in an attempt to scare into silence others who might dare to challenge him,” Brennan wrote.

If it’s true that Brennan is being silenced, then why is he able to publish an op-ed in one of the country’s most circulated newspapers the day after losing his clearance? It’s possible, even likely, that anger at the former CIA director’s anti-Trump outbursts motivated the president’s revocation of Brennan’s clearance, but it’s very unlikely that Trump expected outspoken Obama administration officials to suddenly hide after losing their clearances.

The same morning that Brennan published his screed against the president, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper took to CNN to blast the president’s actions.

“I don’t think doing this is going to affect what we think, write or say,” he told CNN about Trump’s actions.

Clapper also complained that Trump is punishing him and other Obama administration officials for simply following then-President Obama’s orders.

Appearances in two of the country’s leading news sources isn’t usually where political dissidents, as Brennan and Clapper believe themselves to be, end up under authoritarian rule.
