Denver Broncos General Manager John Elway told reporters at a press conference on Thursday that his team offered free agent Colin Kaepernick a contract, but the player, famous for his national anthem protests, refused it.

Kaepernick is currently suing the NFL, alleging that the league has blacklisted him for his activism.

“Colin had his chance to be here,” Elway said. “We offered him a contract. He didn’t take it.”

The GM told reporters that he testified as much in the lawsuit depositions.

“He’s had his chance to be here. He passed it,” he concluded.

If Elway’s account is correct, it could undermine Kaepernick’s claims that the NFL has tried to keep him off the field for his protests.
