John Kasich Admits: I See ‘No Path’ to the White House in 2020

Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, admitted on Friday that he sees “no path” to the White House in 2020.

The former governor ran for president in 2016 and remained in the race after it was clear Donald Trump would become the GOP nominee. Many expected him to again challenge Trump in 2020, but his news Friday put those rumors to rest.

“I don’t see a way to get there,” Kasich said during a CNN interview.

As recently as March, Kasich claimed that “all of my options are still on the table” and that he was still “very seriously” considering a GOP challenge to Trump.

But the Ohio Republican said Friday he’s “never gotten involved in a political race where I didn’t think I could win.”

“Right now, there’s no path,” he added. “But we never know what the future is going to bring.”

For a short time, Kasich was rumored to be considering a bipartisan ticket alongside another fellow former governor, John Hickenlooper. But the Democrat decided to jump into the overly crowded Democratic primary field instead.

Kasich has been a frequent critic of Trump, dating back to the campaign and throughout his first term. While many other GOP candidates who ran against Trump in 2016 have made amends with the president, Kasich has remained defiant.

The Cincinnati Enquirer criticized Kasich’s 2020 dreams late last year after he told ABC News he was still “seriously considering” a primary challenge. “Political observers say Kasich’s path to the White House is narrow – if it exists at all,” the paper wrote.
