Justice Anthony Kennedy to Retire

The senior associate justice of the Supreme Court, Anthony Kennedy, announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from the court on July 31, 2018.

“It has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years on the Supreme Court,” Kennedy said in a statement.

President Ronald Reagan nominated Kennedy to the Supreme Court in 1987. Democrats on the Hill were reportedly stunned by the news.

The retirement of Kennedy means that President Trump will get to nominate his second justice to the Supreme Court.
