Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren: Seat Doug Jones Early So He Can Vote Against Tax Cuts

In a hail-mary effort that may be as much about 2020 as it is about 2017, Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) – two possible presidential candidates – urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to seat Senator-Elect Doug Jones (D-AL) early so he can vote against the GOP tax bill.

Harris tweeted that “voters deserve to have their voice heard in this fight.”

Harris’ tweet betrays her lack of understanding of the Alabama electorate, which may not be surprising given she represents one of the most liberal states in the union. Tax reform was barely discussed in the campaign between Jones and failed candidate Roy Moore, with most of the discussion centering on sexual misconduct accusations against Moore and Jones’ views on abortion.

Warren, though, tweeted a similar message on Tuesday night:

Warren’s tweet would suggest she sees the election as an immediate and powerful rejection of the incumbent Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL), who will serve for a few more weeks, rather than a rejection of Moore amidst allegations he pursued teenage girls when he was in his 30s.

It’s unclear how Jones would vote on the tax bill if given the chance, but a Tax Foundation study released in November found the average “Estimated Gain in After-Tax Income for Middle-Income Family” from the Senate GOP tax bill was $2,078 a year.
