Kamala Harris is Planting 2020 Seeds in 2018 Senate Battlegrounds

Unlike most freshman senators with ambitions for higher political office, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is not hiding the fact that she’ll likely run for president in 2020. Her home state Sacramento Bee called the 2020 campaign “a contest Harris herself is widely expected to join.” Harris’s team has done little to tamp down those expectations, too.

For example, the former California attorney general has spent much of 2018 barnstorming the country, particularly in states with vulnerable incumbent Democrat senators up for reelection this year.

On Saturday, California’s junior senator will headline a sold-out Michigan Democratic Party dinner in Detroit and attend a fundraiser for Sen. Debbie Stabenow. Later this month, Harris heads to Wisconsin to fundraise for another incumbent running in 2018, Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

Over the past six months, Harris has also made trips to three other presidential swing states, attending multiple fundraisers for vulnerable Democratic Sens. Bill Nelson of Florida and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, as well as a state party forum in Nevada. She also headlined a fundraiser for Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse in Rhode Island last October.

The Sacramento Bee also reported that Harris has been actively involved in fundraising for “all 26 of the Senate Democrats up for reelection in November,” as well as for two Democrat Senate challengers in Arizona and Nevada.

It’s a similar move to when Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) donated $256,000 to the Democratic National Committee and all 50 state Democratic parties earlier this year.

In order to be successful in 2020, candidates like Warren and Harris are forced to play nice with Democrats across the country. It allows them to call in favors when they need them during a Democratic primary that’s sure to be contentious.
