Kamala Harris Possibly Eyeing 2020 Campaign HQ in Baltimore

The freshman California Democrat kicked off her book tour on Tuesday, and now it looks like she’s ready to turn that into a presidential announcement tour.

As most political observers expected, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is looking increasingly likely to announce she’s jumping in the Democratic primary for president later this month, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Sources tell the Chronicle that Harris is eyeing an announcement this month, potentially around the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, which is Jan. 21.

Adding further fuel to the speculation is the fact that outlets are reporting that Harris’s political team is shopping for campaign headquarter space on the east coast, rather than in her home state of California. Here’s why:

Although Harris will have a strong campaign presence in California, her team wants its national campaign headquarters to be on the East Coast. One reason is that the national cable news outlets, which have become increasingly critical to presidential campaign exposure, all operate on Eastern Time.

There’s also a travel advantage. With the exception of Nevada, most of the first-round Democratic caucuses and primaries are either on the East Coast or in Midwest.

The Chronicle’s Phil Matier speculates that the city that could serve as Harris’s east coast political home is Baltimore.

Presidential candidates are often cautious not to plant their HQs in Washington, D.C. for fear of looking too much like an insider. Baltimore’s close proximation to D.C., plus its “quick access to airports with regular flights to California, Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and other early primary states,” make it a top contender.
