Attorney General Josh Hawley (R-MO) knows how important the Supreme Court vacancy is to the U.S. Senate this summer and fall, and he wants to debate his incumbent opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), about the issue.

Missourinet reported:

“This is the defining issue of American politics. It’s the defining issue for the country,” Hawley said. “It’s something that I care deeply about. It’s my background, It’s been my career.”

He challenged U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill to a debate on the Supreme Court and laid out his criteria for a new justice.

“It needs to be someone who will apply the constitution the way it is written… able to stand up to political pressure,” he said. “Somebody who will apply the law fairly, not based on personal preferences.”

Over the weekend, The Kansas City Star published an editorial praising Hawley’s call for a debate.

Republican Senate candidate Josh Hawley has a great idea. He wants to debate opponent Sen. Claire McCaskill, but limit the exchange to one topic: the U.S. Supreme Court.

Like many Missourians, we wish Hawley and McCaskill would debate their primary opponents first. Assuming both are nominated in August, though, a single-topic debate on the court would help illuminate both candidates’ views on an essential subject.

Will McCaskill answer Hawley’s call? So far, McCaskill has been silent about the new defining issue of this Senate race.
