Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee, scoffed at the idea of work requirements for welfare recipients at the Minnesota Democratic Farm and Labor convention last week.

“Our success will turn on whether somebody gets to develop their mind and seek higher education, get a retirement benefit, survive, eat,” he said.

“You know, they want to make you have a work requirement just to be able to get food stamps nowadays?” Ellison added, raising his arms in dismissal.

“This is the mentality of the people we’re talking about,” the Democrat said.

Ellison, largely seen as the more liberal of the DNC leaders, has often worked to push the party to the left.
