Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair and Democratic candidate for Attorney General of Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) denied the allegation of domestic abuse in his first interview since these allegations emerged earlier this week, and told CBS-Minnesota, “we don’t have to destroy each other,” on Wednesday.

Just days before the Minnesota primary, Ellison’s ex-girlfriend Karen Monahan accused Ellison of emotionally and physically abusing her during their relationship.

WCCO’s Esme Murphy asked Ellison if he ever abused Monahan in any way.

“No,” Ellison responded.

Monahan claimed to have a tape showing Ellison verbally and physically abusing her. Murphy asked Ellison about whether such a tape exists.

“There couldn’t be. There couldn’t be such a thing as that because I never did that. Simply didn’t happen,” Ellison said.

“What would you say to her right now? Because she’s speaking out and continues to speak out on Twitter and social media,” Murphy asked.

“I’d say, look, we loved each other, we don’t have to destroy each other,” Ellison said.
