Former Secretary of State John Kerry said that the soon-to-be 20-person field of candidates vying for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination is not “helpful for the Democratic Party” or the country during an extended interview with CBS’s “This Morning” posted to their YouTube page on Monday.

Co-host Norah O’Donnell asked Kerry about the 20 candidates that will be seeking the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, once former Vice President Joe Biden officially enters the race this week.

“Well, Joe is qualified and should obviously be running. I don’t want to get into a commentary on everybody but I, I don’t think this is helpful for the Democratic Party. I don’t think it’s particularly helpful for the country,” Kerry said. “I think it’s helpful to have a healthy primary but as many candidates as we have today, I think is complicated for voters and complicated for the raising of money.”

O’Donnell asked Kerry whether he thought the number of candidates running for the Democratic primary could hurt the Democratic Party.

“Well, it has the potential to. I don’t think it has yet, but it certainly has the potential to if people start going after each other and if there’s a polarization within the party that it becomes a wound too hard to heal. We have to be careful of that,” Kerry said.

O’Donnell then pointed out how former President Barack Obama said the growing Democratic primary field is close to becoming a “circular firing squad.”

“Historically, we’ve been pretty good a shooting at each other,” Kerry said. “I hope that won’t happen.

“What does it mean if you wind up with a nominee who basically was narrowed down by, you know, in the teens of percentage points of support? I don’t think it builds the momentum,” Kerry added.
