Former Secretary of State John Kerry defended engaging in ‘shadow diplomacy’ to try to preserve the Iran nuclear deal during an interview on Tuesday.

MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace asked Kerry about his recent meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif at the United Nations and whether it was hypocritical of him to meet with Zarif given his criticism of the Trump transition team when they got involved in policymaking involving Israel.

“There’s none whatsoever, none whatsoever,” Kerry said. “My conversations with these people are the normal conversations that I assure every former secretary of state has.”

“These are normal conversations, and all I did was suggest to them, ‘Look, you guys really ought to keep the agreement,'” Kerry said.
