Kevin McCarthy Was the Big Winner Tuesday Night

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) might have been the biggest winner Tuesday night as California voters overwhelmingly voted to recall State Sen. Josh Newman (D-CA) over his vote last year to increase the states gas tax last year on Tuesday.

CBS Los Angeles reported:

“Nearly two-thirds of voters recalled Newman, of Fullerton, over his vote last year to increase fuel and vehicle taxes to raise about $5 billion a year for road repairs.”

The recall of Newman is a big win for McCarthy and House Republicans as McCarthy has spent a “bundle of money” on the Republican gas-tax initiative, with the hope that the “gas tax measure will draw more Republicans to the polls in November and help protect GOP congressional seats in districts that are increasingly going blue.”

If Democrats hope to retake the House in 2018 they will need to flip several Congressional districts in California that Hillary Clinton won in 2016.

But the recall of Newman shows where California voters stand on the issue, and the Republican repeal effort could be the wedge issue Republicans need to keep the House in 2018.

Former Republican Assemblywoman Ling Ling Chang will replace Newman.
