Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) met with Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Tuesday and seemed to come away from the meeting impressed with President Trump’s latest pick for the Supreme Court.

“In a more than two-hour meeting in my office today, Judge Kavanaugh and I had a productive, informative discussion about a wide range of issues, including: his judicial philosophy, his respect for precedent, and the importance of an independent judiciary,” Collins said in a statement. “I look forward to Judge Kavanaugh’s public hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 4th.”

Most of the news from Collins’s meeting with Kavanaugh, though, concerned his assurance to her that he considers Roe v. Wade “settled law.”

Collins is one of a few Republican votes in the Senate seen as a swing vote on Kavanaugh. Collins and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) have indicated they will not support a Supreme Court nominee who is willing to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Collins’s comments about Kavanaugh are seen as a good sign for the judge, who needs 50 votes to be confirmed to the highest court in the land. Forty-eight Republicans are already seen as ‘yes’ votes, so a Collins ‘yes’ would put Kavanaugh one vote away from confirmation.
